Mit Greydon Clarks ALIEN SHOCK aka WHITOUT WARNING (USA 1980) dürften viele Genrefans von heute einige schaurig-schöne Kindheitserinnerung verbinden: Unter dem Titel DAS GEHEIMNIS DER FLIEGENDEN TEUFEL stellten die diversen mitternächtlichen Ausstrahlungen ab Ende der 80er bis in die 90er hinein vor allem im ZDF, aber auch vereinzelt auf 3sat einen ersten Berührungspunkt mit dem phantastischen Film dar. Die Geschichte über einen unheimlichen Alien-Hünen, der ahnungslose Wald-Spaziergänger mit seinen fiesen, glitschigen Quallen bewirft, war für neugierige Teenie-Augen auch allzu verlockend, um sich gegen Mitternacht (und das vielleicht auch noch heimlich) ein paar schöne-gruslige anderthalb Stunden vor der Röhre zu machen.
Freilich mag der atmosphärisch durchaus stimmige Sci-Fi-Horror aus heutiger Sicht etwas „atmodisch“ daher kommen, vielleicht auch teilweise unfreiwillig komisch – unterhaltsam ist ALIEN SHOCK allemal. Neben dem jungen David Caruso bürgt allein das Wiedersehen mit Jack Palance, Martin Landau, Neville Brand, Ralph Meeker und natürlich Cameron Mitchell für Freude.
Anzumerken bleibt an dieser Stelle noch, dass die auf ZDF und 3sat ausgestrahlten TV-Fassungen in einigen blutig-glitschigen Details (genau wie DVD von e-m-s) um einige Sekunden geschnitten waren. Hierzu gibt es auch einen Schnittbericht. Neben der Cut-DVD von e-m-s erschien ALIEN SHOCK in diversen Auflagen auch bei X-Rated, VMZ und Astro auf DVD, hier jedoch ungeschnitten.
Im August 2014 veröffentlichte das geschätzte US-Label Scream Factory den Film unter seinem Originaltitel WHITOUT WARNING erstmals auf Blu-ray mit einem Audiokommentar und neuen Interviews als Bonusmaterial. Blu-rays von Scream Factory kündigen auch eine deutsche Veröffentlichung an – und die kommt nun endlich auch am 27.03.2015 von CMV Laservision in Kooperation mit New Vision Films.
Als Extras sind der Audiokommentar von Greydon Clark (wie bei CMV üblich leider ohne dt. UT), die alte und die neue dt. Synchro, der Originaltrailer, Bildergalerie, animierte interaktive Menüs und diverse Programmtrailer angekündigt.
